Structural Transformation and Economic Growth (STEG)

The Structural Transformation and Economic Growth (STEG) programme, established in March 2020, aims to provide a better understanding of structural change, productivity, and growth in low- and middle-income countries. STEG seeks to develop a strong body of evidence that will help country governments, international development organisations, NGOs, and the private sector to design and implement strategies, policies, and programmes that better facilitate structural change, productivity gains, and both sustained and sustainable growth.

Years active

Between the launch of the initiative in early 2020 and summer 2022 STEG has awarded 56 Small Research Grants, 25 PhD Research Grants, and 12 Larger Research Grants, as well as nine Ideas for Transformation. As of July 31 2022 the STEG Working Paper Series includes 15 papers from STEG-funded projects and events while several others have been produced by the programme’s academic leadership using STEG funding. As grants approach endline, we expect to see a rise in the number of working papers produced with many leading to publication in high-quality economic journals.
